Legal Help in the Bahamas

If you or someone you know has been detained, arrested, or needs legal                                      representation — here is what to do first.                            Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

If you are arrested

If You Are Arrested — Do This First

1

Stay calm and comply

Do not resist or argue. Comply with instructions while clearly stating you wish to speak with a lawyer.

2

Ask for a lawyer immediately

Say clearly: "I want a lawyer before I answer any questions." Do not sign anything without legal counsel present.

3

Contact your embassy or consulate

Request that police notify your embassy. Consular officers can visit you, help find a lawyer, and contact your family.

4

Notify someone you trust

Ask to make a phone call to a family member, travel companion, or your cruise ship's guest services desk.

5

Document everything

As soon as possible, write down the names of officers, times, locations, and exactly what was said. This is vital for your defence.

Your legal protections

Know Your Rights

Bahamian law grants certain protections to all persons, including visitors. Understanding these rights can make a critical difference.
